Australian actress Milly Alcock, famed for her portrayal of young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the inaugural season of HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, has clinched the coveted role of Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC Universe project.

Alcock, who hails from Australia, emerged victorious in the casting competition, triumphing over CODA actress Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly, known for voicing Supergirl in various DC animated movies such as Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.

Represented by CAA, Shanahan Management, Entertainment 360, and Curtis Brown, Milly Alcock’s inclusion adds an exciting dimension to the DC Universe lineup. While there is speculation that the new Supergirl might make her debut in James Gunn’s Superman Legacy, currently in pre-production in Georgia, this information remains unconfirmed. What is certain, however, is that she will feature in a DC-based project before headlining her own solo venture, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The solo film, announced a year ago at DC’s studio press day, draws inspiration from Tom King’s 2022 comic book series, with Bilquis Evely serving as the illustrator.

Regarding the upcoming Supergirl project, James Gunn shared insights during the initial announcement, highlighting the character’s distinct backstory. Gunn noted, “In our series, we see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
