On Monday, three members of a California family admitted guilt in a significant nationwide conspiracy involving the theft and trafficking of catalytic converters, with an estimated worth of $600 million. The culprits, namely brothers Tou Sue Vang, 32, and Andrew Vang, 28, as well as their mother, Monica Moua, 58, were instrumental in a vast network of criminals spanning across the United States. This network was involved in stealing catalytic converters in California and then transporting them to New Jersey, where the stolen auto anti-smog devices were sold to a metal refinery for the staggering sum of $600 million, as stated by the U.S. attorney’s office.

This intricate scheme involved not only the theft but also the illegal trade of catalytic converters, which are appealing targets due to their high content of precious metals, including platinum. The converters were then provided to a metal refinery, generating substantial profits for the criminal enterprise. In total, 21 individuals from California and New Jersey have been implicated in this case, facing charges related to their involvement in this elaborate operation.

The Sacramento-based family members pleaded guilty to their roles in transporting these stolen devices and, in return, amassed over $38 million. Tou Sue Vang, in particular, also confessed to 39 charges linked to money laundering, indicating the complexity and magnitude of the financial manipulations undertaken within this criminal network.

Catalytic converters, owing to their composition of valuable metals, have become highly coveted items in the black market. Some of the metals found in these devices are more valuable per ounce than gold, and their worth has steadily risen in recent years. Consequently, the illicit market price for catalytic converters can reach exorbitant amounts, with individual units being valued at over $1,000 each.

The scale of this criminal activity is reflected in the statistics provided by federal prosecutors, which highlight that California alone accounts for a staggering 37% of catalytic converter theft claims nationwide. Every month, approximately 1,600 of these devices are reported stolen in the state, underscoring the alarming frequency and audacity of these thefts.
