Al Jazeera Gaza Bureau Chief’s Family Dies in Israeli Air Raid

Wael Dahdouh, the bureau chief of Al Jazeera Arabic in Gaza, has tragically lost his wife, son, daughter, and grandson due to a devastating Israeli airstrike.

The video broadcast on Al Jazeera depicted Dahdouh’s visit to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah. On Wednesday, he went there to pay his respects to his deceased wife, son, and daughter, who were housed in the morgue.

He was observed crouching down and gently stroking the face of his 15-year-old son, Mahmoud, who aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a journalist.

Subsequent recordings depicted him cradling the covered corpse of his seven-year-old daughter, Sham, appearing to communicate with her while gazing upon her bruised countenance following the assault in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

[Dahdouh], expressing surprise, provided a statement to Al Jazeera as he left the hospital. He asserted that the events were evident, referring to a string of deliberate assaults on innocent individuals, including children, women, and civilians. Dahdouh emphasized that his prior report from Yarmouk detailed a similar incident, and he highlighted the Israeli airstrikes which have impacted numerous regions, including Nuseirat.

“We had our doubts that the Israeli occupation would not let these people go without punishing them. And sadly, that is what happened. This is the ‘safe’ area that the occupation army spoke of.”

Adam, the grandson of Dahdouh, was pronounced dead after a lapse of two hours.

During the assault on the residence in the Nuseirat refugee camp, situated south of Wadi Gaza, several individuals from Dahdouh’s family, including a young granddaughter, managed to survive.

Efforts are currently underway to save individuals trapped in the debris of the residence.

Based on Al Jazeera Arabic’s report, Yehia, the son of Dahdouh, sustained an injury that necessitated medical professionals to promptly undertake a critical procedure to stop the bleeding in his head.

The doctors faced challenges in finding suitable instruments in the hospital corridor, which led them to resort to using non-surgical thread for stitching the wound.

Al Jazeera Media Network stated that the indiscriminate attack carried out by the Israeli occupation forces led to the devastating loss of Dahdouh’s wife, son, and daughter, with the rest of his family trapped beneath the debris.

Their residence in the Nuseirat camp, located in the heart of Gaza, was specifically attacked. They had taken shelter there after being forced to leave their neighborhood due to the initial bombing. This was a result of an appeal made by [Israeli] Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu, urging all civilians to relocate to the southern region.

Reporting from Gaza, Al Jazeera correspondent Youmna Elsayed expressed deep sadness while discussing Wael’s family and witnessing the immense pain he is going through. Wael, who not only serves as a bureau chief but also provides guidance and support, addresses the team as a caring older sibling.

Despite the numerous threats and warnings, he decided to remain in Gaza City and continued reporting for 19 consecutive days. His determination to document the plight of the people who were being subjected to daily bombings led him to stay put.
