Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that Twitter has sent an extraordinary cease-and-desist letter to Meta concerning their recently unveiled Threads application. Twitter’s legal team, in the said letter, accuses Meta of unlawfully appropriating Twitter’s confidential information and asserts that Meta recruited former employees of Twitter who unlawfully retained proprietary data. According to the letter, these employees were deliberately deployed to develop Threads by exploiting Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property, thus contravening state and federal laws as well as their ongoing obligations to Twitter.
In a rather humorous disavowal, a representative from Meta made it clear that none of the individuals comprising the Threads engineering team have any association with previous employment at Twitter. Meanwhile, Threads, which has been developed as an extension of the preexisting Instagram app, has gained remarkable traction since its release, amassing an impressive 30 million users within the initial 24 hours, including prominent influencers from the social media realm.
This ongoing legal dispute between Twitter and Meta adds another layer of absurdity to the already controversial situation surrounding Twitter, particularly after its acquisition by Elon Musk. It serves as a clear indication of the unconventional circumstances at hand, as Musk recently announced Twitter’s implementation of a daily tweet limit for users, further highlighting the unique nature of this situation.
